New Delhi / Washington: Today is the 18th day of the farmers’ movement in India, while the echo of this movement is being heard in foreign countries also. After Canada, the phase of protest is being seen in other countries also in protest against agricultural laws. During a protest against agricultural laws in Washington DC, USA, some protesters painted and vandalized the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Indian Embassy. The flag of Khalistan was also seen at the spot.
Sikh-American youth demonstrated in support of farmers opposing the new agricultural laws in India, and during this time, Khalistani separatists shattered grandchildren in Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and later broke it.
In addition to Greater Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia, hundreds of Sikhs from states such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina took out a car rally to the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. Meanwhile, some Sikhs came there with Khalistani flags along with anti-India posters and banners. Many banners had ‘Republic of Khalistan’ written on them. Some of these Khalistani Sikhs came in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi holding a saber in hand and pasted a poster on it. The group also raised slogans in support of anti-India and Khalistan.
The Indian embassy issued a statement condemning ‘this evil act of people who commit hooliganism as protesters’.
The embassy said that it has lodged a strong protest in this regard with the US law enforcement agencies and has also taken up the matter with the US State Department for investigation and action under the law.
When all this happened on Saturday afternoon, a large number of Washington DC Police and Secret Service personnel were present there.
Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Beagan has also apologized for the incident. Beagan had unveiled this idol with Indian Taranjit Singh Sandhu last month.
For the last few days in India, there has been a continuous agitation against farmers against this law. So far, five rounds of talks have been held between the Center and the farmers’ organizations, but the farmers are adamant on the withdrawal of the Agricultural Act, while the government says that it can pass it again with some amendments.
The intelligence agency is continuously reporting about this movement of farmers. A report says that Khalistani is also using this movement for their own benefit. At the same time, after the photo of the agitators with the posters of the arrested activists went viral, the farmer leaders had said that the movement should not be misused.
